People lose teeth all the time, either through trauma when teeth are knocked out (see Kyran Bracken's story below!) or due to decay, gum disease or the ageing process. Whatever the reason, your teeth need to be replaced both for functional and aesthetic reasons. Dental implants are popular because they provide a long term fixed solution, slow down bone loss and avoid the need to prepare and cut healthy teeth for bridgework.
A dental implant is actually an artificial replacement for the root portion of your natural tooth and is anchored into a prepared socket in your jaw bone to support a crown, bridge or secure a denture firmly in place. Implants are made from titanium as it is well tolerated by the body and integrates easily with bone tissue. During the placement of a dental implant, the goal is to achieve a close contact between the outer surface of the implant and the surrounding bone tissue, so they can fuse together (a process known as osseointegration) and create a stable support for the new teeth. An 'abutment' or small post is then screwed into the implant. This post can be made from gold or a tooth coloured material called Zirconium (a substance also known as white steel). The post then has a tooth-coloured crown placed on top that is aesthetically pleasing and almost as strong as a natural tooth, giving a look that is almost indistinguishable from the real thing.
