Watford dentists warn "neglecting your teeth and gums could affect your chances of developing heart disease"

If you're neglecting your teeth and gums, you could be putting yourself at risk of the UK's number one killer, heart disease. That's the stark message coming from leading Watford dentists, Drs David Bloom and Jay Padayachy of Senova Dental Studios.

Medical studies have shown that the plaque bacteria responsible for tooth decay and gum disease can affect body health too. There is a strong link between gum disease and the narrowing of the arteries (a process known as atherosclerosis), which can lead to heart attack.

Dr Jay Padayachy comments: "Because gum disease is not painful, treatment is sometimes not high on the list of must dos where it comes to health. Taking care of your gums is so important though – not only to keep a lovely smile, but also for your health and wellbeing."

Most people have some plaque on their teeth and gums, a sticky mixture of food, bacteria and bacterial waste. If not removed carefully and regularly, the gums can become infected and inflamed – bleeding when you brush is an early sign. If left untreated, the gums can swell and pockets of infection can deepen, trapping more and more plaque. If bacteria then get dislodged, arteries can become clogged and narrowed with fatty deposits, resulting in heart disease.

Smokers are particularly at risk of gum disease, as smoking cuts the amount of oxygen and nutrients to the gums, damaging and delaying the healing process, and making the gums more susceptible to infection.

The good news is though that gum diseases and many other dental conditions are really easy and pain free to treat.

The message from Dr David Bloom, is simple ... "as well as being a healthy weight, exercising regularly, eating well and not smoking, get advice about how to keep your teeth and gums really clean and healthy."

Senova Dental Studios in Leavesden Road in Watford offers a full range of dental checkups and procedures, oral hygiene and continuing care, as well as restorative dentistry, dental implants and complete smile makeovers. Senova is proud to be a mercury-free practice.
